Proctoring & Interview Integrity
Understand how Sara detects potential integrity issues during interviews, including tab-switching, audio analysis, and multi-monitor detection. Learn when to use strict vs. relaxed proctoring.
How Proctoring Works
When proctoring is enabled for a job, Sara collects integrity signals throughout the interview. Candidates see a clear notice before they start, explaining what signals are collected and why. Sara summarizes these signals in the interview report, flagging anything unusual for your review.
Detection Signals
Sara monitors multiple signals during proctored interviews. Each signal is collected passively and does not interrupt the candidate.
| Signal | What It Detects | How It Works |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshots | Whether the candidate is reading from notes or another screen | Periodic screen-sharing snapshots captured during the interview |
| Audio Analysis | Unusual audio patterns during answers | Microphone input analyzed for anomalies such as background voices during each answer |
| Tab-Switching Detection | Candidate leaving the interview tab to search for answers | Counts how many times the candidate navigates away from the interview tab |
| Multi-Monitor Detection | Use of a second screen to reference materials | Detects whether the candidate's browser reports multiple displays |
| Multiple Faces | Possible presence of another person during the interview | Visual analysis flags when more than one face may be present in the frame |
Proctoring Reports
After the interview, Sara includes a proctoring summary in the candidate report. The summary lists each signal type, the number of flags detected, and a severity indicator (low, medium, high). Reviewers see this alongside the interview score and transcript. Sara does not automatically disqualify candidates based on proctoring signals. She presents the data and leaves the decision to your hiring team.
Strict vs. Relaxed Proctoring
You choose the proctoring level when creating or editing a job. Both levels are available on all plans.
| Level | Signals Collected | Recommended For |
|---|---|---|
| Strict | All signals: screenshots, audio analysis, tab-switching, multi-monitor, multiple faces | Regulated industries, security-sensitive roles, high-stakes positions |
| Relaxed | Tab-switching and audio analysis only (no screenshots or visual checks) | Standard roles, high-volume hiring, candidate-friendly processes |
Proctoring Limitations
Proctoring provides useful data points, but it is not a replacement for human judgment. A high tab-switch count could mean a candidate was looking up answers, or it could mean they received a notification and dismissed it. Review proctoring flags in context alongside the candidate's answers and overall score. Some regions have legal restrictions on screen capture and audio recording. Verify your local regulations before enabling strict proctoring.
Note
Sara always notifies candidates when proctoring is active. She never collects signals without the candidate's knowledge and consent.
